Lahey Clinic, Lahey Clinic Medical Center Expansion

When Lahey Clinic selected Shepley Bulfinch in 2000 to design a Cancer Center, it quickly became apparent that the medical center had a long list of expansion needs. A six-month master planning exercise helped prioritize demands for increased ambulatory and diagnostic services, as well as new beds and parking.

To date, existing circulation spines have been extended across a series of new courtyards that step down the sloping site to provide light and air to a very dense facility. The new pavilions, structured to expand vertically, are clad in metal panels and rest on a base of brick and masonry that tie into the existing context. The Visitor Parking Garage, which is parallel to the existing facility to provide multiple access points, is part of an extensive reworking of the 53-acre site, creating a series of new entries at the upper and lower campus.

Phase One, which was completed in November 2005, included 36 medical surgical beds on the 6th and 7th floor of the existing building. Phase Two, will include 24 SICU beds and administrative offices for the anesthesiology and respiratory therapy department. Phase Three will provide new operating rooms on the second level, urology and oncology services on the third level and executive health services on the fourth. Phase Four will include renovation of the recovery area and preadmission testing. Future projects include radiation oncology, additional beds, expanded Surgery, Imaging and Emergency Departments and a 350-car employee garage.
