Philadelphia University, College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce

Philadelphia, PA | 2012

The home of the new College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce brings together three previously scattered disciplines under one roof with a program that showcases Philadelphia University's integrated learning approach. Within its iconic form, teaching, studio, and prototyping spaces mesh seamlessly; creating a collaborative environment that combines analytical real-world problem-solving scenarios with hands-on studio-based learning. The center's signature space is the double-height forum, hosting informal gatherings and planned events. Circulation spaces throughout the building offer social spaces and opportunities to display project work. A perforated metal solar screen wraps the building, creating its signature form and mitigating the sun's rays while allowing views to the outside. The project, which features a vegetated green roof, is pursuing a minimum of LEED Silver certification.
