Washington University, Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering
St Louis, MO | 2002
An integrated teaching and research facility, Whitaker Hall includes a flexible lab wing with 22,000 s.f. of wet lab space; 12,500 s.f. of procedure, equipment and environmental areas; a nanofabrication lab; vivarium and electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance suites. Supporting the research space and creating a scholarly center for students and faculty, a three-story atrium connects the lab wing with faculty office pods, classrooms, a 250-seat auditorium, computer classrooms, student and faculty lounges, and library and seminar rooms. The building's contemporary Gothic design in red Missouri granite and limestone compliments its surrounding stone buildings.
Shepley Bulfinch also played a role in the master plan for the East Campus, where Whitaker Hall is located.

"We wanted the facility to have spaces that encouraged interactions as well as to be sufficiently flexible to accommodate many different laboratory types and teaching space as our needs evolved... Additionally without exception, visitors from around the world remark on the beauty and functionality of this facility. Those who work in it day-to-day also continue to rave about the environment. Thus, it is clear to me that the entire project was an unqualified success attributable, without a doubt, to this design team."
