Henan Medical Center for Public Health, Tuberculosis Research and Control Institute
Zhengzhou, Henan, China | 2010
Creating a healing environment immersed in nature defines this master plan and conceptual design for a major medical facility in Henan province. The submission was selected as a finalist in an international design competition for the project.
The phased development of this 800-bed tuberculosis treatment and research facility on a 12-acre site uses a strategy of zones to accommodate both sophisticated medical technologies and the sense of health and well-being conveyed by the natural environment.
The plan uses site organization and natural elements to emphasize safety, health, and well-being. The buildings are organized around a geothermal lake, which supplies a significant amount of the hospital's heating and cooling requirements.
Treatment facilities, including surgical suites and the emergency department, are sited beneath green roofs that gently slope down to the lake. Healing spaces "float" above, with bed towers enveloped in the natural environment to provide a place of restful healing. Private gardens offer patients views of the lake and surrounding landscape.
Site circulation both above and below grade and the use of landscaped buffers segregate infected and non-infected populations and materials.
