North Shore Community College, Addition

Lynn, MA | 2017

The 39,000 sf addition to the North Shore Community College Lynn Campus transforms the building into a welcoming place for students and members of the entire Lynn community.

The 1985 McGee building was designed to serve 1,000 students, and with current enrollment around 4,000, the addition provides much-needed spaces for the larger student body. The three-story addition features 10 new classrooms, administrative and executive offices, computer and testing labs, and study spaces. The building's new "one-stop" Student Success Center consolidates the offices of admissions, financial aid and academic assistance into one convenient location on the addition's first floor. The project gives the McGee building a new main entrance as well as a dramatic plaza facing the city that welcomes the community onto campus. The design and construction of the McGee addition follows a study completed by Shepley Bulfinch in 2011 that involved a college-wide review of programs and needs, a priority assessment for new and renovated spaces, and a conceptual design solution.
