Universidad de los Andes, La Clinica
Santiago, Chile | 2006
This academic medical center is designed around the principle of patient dignity and planned as a major component of this rapidly growing university. Planned as three integrated facilities, with an inpatient wing, diagnostic and treatment building, and clinic and support services structure, the design allows for the phased development of each component. With a 700-car garage beneath it, the facility will be built on a steep site that offers dramatic views and multiple access points.
The hospital places particular emphasis on patient respect and privacy, with separate corridors for patient and visitor movement. Quality of medical care is enhanced by providing patients with spiritual and physical amenities that include a large chapel.
The design of La Clinica follows the firm's completion of the University's Master Plan, Business School, and Library. In association with Alemparte y Barreda, Shepley Bulfinch completed schematic design and design development in 2006.
