US General Services Administration, The Warren B. Rudman United States Courthouse

Concord, NH | 1996

The design of the Rudman Courthouse recalls the monumental courthouses of the 19th century, its granite and limestone materials and detailing harmonizing with other buildings in the State Capitol Historic District. The facility includes District and Magistrates' Courtrooms, Judges' Chambers, the Court Library, and office of the Clerk of the Court. While formal in composition, the plan provides a contemporary solution to complex security mandates: its circulation system separates public zones from restricted staff areas and secure prisoner corridors. Judicial chambers are located in a collegial arrangement, allowing common use of a central law library. All courtrooms receive natural light, and skylights throughout give interior spaces a sense of openness and animation. Shepley Bulfinch was the Design Architect for the project, a joint venture with PMR Architects, PC.
